Infectious Disease
As the industry leader in developing breakthrough products to treat pediatric respiratory infectious diseases, MedImmune has substantially contributed to the health and well-being of infants and children worldwide. Our success to date has primarily come from the introduction of two generations of antibodies to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The first was RespiGam® a polyclonal antibody introduced in 1996, followed in 1998 by Synagis®, a monoclonal antibody. A third-generation antibody is now in clinical testing that may have the potential to further improve upon the profile established by Synagis in helping to prevent hospitalizations due to RSV in high-risk infants. In other areas of infectious disease, we recently launched FluMist® (Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal), the first innovation in flu prevention in over 50 years, and continued our efforts to develop products targeting human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and parainfluenza virus type-3 (PIV-3).
