Postdoctoral student of Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Eric Boilard, wins first place for his research on the role of platelets in amplifying inflammation in arthritis.

MedImmune announces winners of first European Cancer Research Abstract Competition which highlights the work of tomorrow’s scientific leaders in cancer research. First prize of £2,000 was awarded to Nicole Simonavicius, a PhD student at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, UK for her research into the role of the tumour pericyte receptor endosialin in angiogenesis.

MedImmune advances three oncology antibody programs into Phase 1 clinical development within the past six months. All three antibody candidates target a variety of advanced solid tumors, but via different pathways.

MedImmune launches “Don’t Play with the Flu,”™ a national health awareness campaign in partnership with Women’s Professional Soccer and the American Youth Soccer Organization. Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain, soccer champions and moms, kick off the campaign which highlights the importance of getting a seasonal influenza vaccination every year.

MedImmune begins shipping FluMist® (Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal) for the 2009-2010 influenza season.

MedImmune was awarded a contract to manufacture monovalent (single-strain) live attenuated influenza vaccine for Novel Influenza A (H1N1) to vaccinate priority populations by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). An initial $90 million of vaccine has been placed.

MedImmune expands assistance program for Synagis® (palivizumab) to qualify as many as 75 percent of U.S. households to receive the antibody at no cost. MedImmune funds the first observational prospective study to assess the full burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) among preterm infants.

For the sixth consecutive year, MedImmune awards five fellowship research grants to advance viral respiratory disease research. The grant candidates, which are required to be full-time fellows conducting original research as their primary focus in an American Board of Pediatrics-accredited fellowship program receive $35,000 each.

MedImmune presents data at the 2009 Pediatric Academic Societies' (PAS) annual meeting in Baltimore, MD which suggests that Flumist (Influenza Vaccine Live, Intranasal) has an acceptable safely profile among mild to moderately immunocompromised children with cancer.

MedImmune sponsors a recent study, which is continuous evidence that, late-preterm infants face greater morbidity and healthcare costs up to at least one year after birth. The analysis suggests that even mild prematurity is associated with increased risk of medically attended RSV infection, and that this risk is higher among infants exposed to supplemental oxygen or assisted ventilation during the neonatal period.

During the Annual Meeting for the American Association of Cancer Research, MedImmune showcases its commitment to cancer research with the presentation of eleven abstracts on the progress that has been made in various oncology programs.

MedImmune submits a Marketing Authorization Application in the European Union for the Intranasal Vaccine to Prevent Seasonal Influenza. The MAA submission for LAIV is based on data from 73 global clinical and U.S. post-marketing studies of more than 141,000 subjects that are conducted in 38 countries.
